Award recipients to be selected
at awards banquet on June 8

The 15 finalists for Northwest Ohio's 1999 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur®
awards have been selected and the award recipients will be
announced on June 8, 1999 at the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle,
according to Larry A. Davenport, Partner of Ernst & Young
LLP and Program Director for the Northwest Ohio Entrepreneur
Of The Year program.
The finalists are:
Appliance Center in Maumee - Charles Oswald, President.
Founded in 1983, The Appliance Center is the third largest,
single location appliance retailer in the United States. The
Appliance Center's mission it to provide appliance and electronics
at a fair price to their customers.
The Fred Christen and Sons Company in Toledo - Frederick
Christen, President. The Fred Christen and Sons Company
was founded in 1987 and is a Toledo-based roofing and sheet
metal fabricating enterprise which currently employs 500 individuals.
Consolidated Biscuit Co., Inc. in McComb - James Appold,
President. Founded in 1963, Consolidated Biscuit has become
one of the largest privately-owned cookie and cracker companies
in the United States with over 2,100 employees.
Cousino's Navy Bistro in Toledo - Thomas Cousino, President
and CEO. Open for business in 1996, Cousino's Navy bistro,
a restaurant located on the east bank of the Maumee River
offers a variety of dishes on its menu, excellent wine selections
and treats patrons to a great view of the Toledo skyline while
they dine.
Mark Feldstein & Associates, Inc. in Maumee - Mark Feldstein,
President. In 1986, Mark Feldstein & Associates was formed
as an importer and distributor of giftware and electronics.
IET, Inc. in Toledo - Timothy Stansfield, President.
IET provides industrial engineering and consulting services
to manufacturing companies throughout the world. Specific
services are to improve customer productivity and include
work design, plant layout design, warehouse design, quality
improvement services, work measurement, manufacturing simulation
and other related engineering services.
LifeFormations in Bowling Green - Gene Poor, CEO. LifeFormations
was founded in 1992 and is a creator of static and animated
characters for entertainment. These characters have appeared
in museums, trade shows, theme parks, retail outlets and restaurants.
Malcolm Meats in Northwood - Andy Malcolm, President.
Malcolm Meats was founded in 1982 and currently employs 75
individuals. Malcolm Meats is recognized as a premier purveyor
of fine portion cut beef, pork, lamb, veal and poultry products.
Mosser Construction, Inc. in Fremont - Robert Moyer, Chairman
of the Board. Mosser Construction is one of the areas
largest general contractors. In 49 years, it has built more
than $1 billion worth of factories, office buildings, schools
and universities, water and wastewater treatment plants, hospitals
and shopping centers.
Pinnacle Plastic Products in Bowling Green - Gary Gratop,
Vice President & CFO, Arthur Hagan, President, and Kevin Tearney,
Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Pinnacle Plastic
Products is a custom industrial blow molding company which
services customers such as Little Tikes, Rubbermaid, Hedstrom
and many other quality oriented companies.
Zyndorf/Serchuk, Inc. in Toledo - Mark Zyndorf, President
and Stephen Serchuk, Co-Owner. Zyndorf/Serchuk is a commercial
real estate brokerage, consultant and property management
firm which was founded in 1986.
Winners selected from these finalists will be eligible for
twelve national Entrepreneur Of The Year category awards,
as well as the National Entrepreneur Of The Year. All National
Entrepreneur Of The Year finalists and award winners will
be announced at the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year
International Conference in Palm Springs, California on November
13, 1999.
The independent panel of judges for the 1999 Northwest Ohio
Entrepreneur Of The Year include:
Kim Beck, President & CEO - Automatic Feed Company
Richard Kinzel, President & CEO - Cedar Fair, L.P.
Donald Jakeway, President & CEO - Regional Growth Partnership
Jani Miller, President & CEO - Central Travel
Kevin Sauder, President - Sauder Woodworking Company
Last year's Northwest Ohio award recipients include:
- Paul Aley, President, National Machinery Company in
Tiffin.
- Richard L. Kinzel, CEO, Cedar Fair, L.P., Sandusky.
- Richard M. Marcus, President, FRC International, Inc.
- William G. Martin M.D., Medical Director/Chairman of
the Board, Kahn & Diehl Centers for Progressive Eye Care,
Oregon.
- Dr. Harold A. McMaster, Chairman & CEO, Solar Cells,
Inc. in Toledo.
- Dale J. Seymour, President, Seymour & Associates/MassMutual
- The Blue Chip Company in Maumee.
- Brian Zifkin, President, BZ Design, Inc., Holland.
Founded and produced by Ernst & Young LLP for the past 11
years in Northwest Ohio and nationally co-sponsored by USA
Today, CNNfn and CNN, the Nasdaq-Amex Market Group,
and the Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership at
the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, the awards are sponsored
locally by Browne Printing, the Ohio Department of Development
and Fox 36 WUPW in the search for the nation's best entrepreneurs.
Recipients of the Entrepreneur Of The Year award become lifetime
members of the Entrepreneur Of The Year Hall of Fame.
