... The federal SBIR program was established in 1982 to fund
research and development in companies with up to 500 employees.
Since it began, more than $3.2 billion has been awarded to
small businesses across the country. Eleven federal agencies
participate.
The northwest Ohio companies receiving Phase I money under
the SBIR program, and the agencies they will work for, are
Electronic Concepts & Engineering of Toledo, which specializes
in electronic research and development, from the Army; IET,
Inc., a Toledo engineering firm, from NASA, and Maumee-based
Anatrace, Inc., from the Health and Human Services agency.
Area companies that received Phase II grants were Electronic
Concepts, from the Advanced Research Projects Agency, and
Technovation Training, of Sylvania, from the administration
for Children and Family Services, which is part of Health
and Human services.
Amy Strauss, a spokesman in the Ohio Department of Development,
said Phase I funding is usually for up to six months and provides
funds to conduct feasibility, experimental, or theoretical
research.
Phase II funding is to continue the research and development
on the most promising projects, and usually is for up to a
two-year period.
