Challenge:
Use the simulation to show opportunities
to increase the efficiency of the finishing department by
improving material flow and eliminating bottlenecks. Also
predict the optimum number of finishing cells required to
deflash castings.
IET's Solution:
The first task was to collect accurate
data to utilize in the simulation model. IET's staff conducted
time studies to capture cycle time data. Once the data was
summarized, IET coordinated with plant personnel to discuss
proposed finishing equipment options. The model was built
and "what-if" scenarios were reviewed to determine the most
feasible course to optimize the finishing cell layout. IET
and client staff then verified results.
Results:
IET developed the model in a timely fashion
allowing the client's staff to focus on other issues.
Based on the options determined by the model, the client was
able to present cost-effective layout opportunities for company
management to evaluate.
